(More customer reviews)This version of the UDAC2 doesn't have RCA line or Coax out. I didn't want to hook my notebook PC into my main stereo. The supplied USB cable is of good quality and about 10 inches long. In my Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit system, the device drivers installed automatically upon booting up the computer and the NuForce was set as the default audio device. Once the drivers load, the PC must be restarted.
The UDAC2-HP is very small (measuring approximately 2 5/8 inches W by 1 5/8 inches D by 7/8 inches H). Because the supplied USB cable is quite stiff, the unit is relatively stable. If it does slide around, two 3M Command Strips (medium size) will anchor it securely without damage.
The single headphone jack is 3.5mm. When using headphones with a 1/4 inch plug, like the Sennheiser HD595, I recommend using the Grado or Sennheiser 1/4 inch to 3.5mm adapter cable to reduce stress on the jack.
The NuForce is powered by the USB port and has no batteries or external power supply. It should be plugged into a powered USB port. The volume control can be set to OFF.
Looking at the NuForce, you wouldn't think it would deliver enough gain to drive full size headphones such as the Sennheiser HD595, but 10 or 11 o'clock on the volume control produces more than enough volume depending upon the track. Turning it up past 12 o'clock would be painful. Because there is a limit to how much current a USB port can deliver to a device like this, mating it with efficient headphones will produce the best results.
I chose the NuForce over the Fiio E7 because the NuForce is a straightforward USB DAC/AMP, and therefore parts quality is concentrated solely on those functions instead of additional features like Bass EQ or display, etc.
Sound quality is superb: clean, detailed and extended at both frequency extremes. It's an excellent product, a solution for those who want the best sound from their PC.
