First of all, I'm using this product on a MacBook Pro, so my review will address that particular experience.
I found this hard drive incredibly easy to use, from unpacking it (no clamshell packaging- hallelujah!!) to set up, to use, and even to store after I was done with my backup.
The drive measures 4x3" (a little bigger than a playing card or an iPhone) and is very thin. It runs completely silently- the only way I knew it was working was by feeling it gently "whir" when I put my hand on it- and has stayed cool to the touch in the several hours I have had it attached to my MacBook and have been using it.
When I received the Verbatim drive, I simply pulled it from its box, attached the included USB cord (which is nice and compact at about 3.5 inches- just enough of a cord to give the product a bit of leeway but not enough to get tangled up in the rest of the cords I've got going on around my laptop) and plugged the drive into my MacBook.
The "Time Machine" application, included with all recent Apple computers, popped up automatically and set-up was a snap. My MacBook instantly recognized the drive, formatted it, and began a back-up of my computer automatically. I had never run Time Machine before and always put it off because I figured it would be a hassle, requiring a lot of set up and deciding which files to copy and which files to update, etc. But it was more or less completely automatic- all I had to do was click on the "okay" prompt on my screen and the backup did its own thing. I left the computer for about an hour and when I got back, my entire computer (about 200 GB) was backed up. As long as I leave the drive connected, Time Machine will automatically continue to update all the files I have backed up.
I also tried a "manual" backup (without the use of Time Machine) by dragging and dropping files onto the hard drive's icon and it worked perfectly, just as if I were moving files around on my computer. The transfer of data was quick and required no prompts, permissions, etc.
Even though my husband has numerous computers, data servers, and hard drives strung throughout our home network (he's a software engineer), I really wanted my *own* hard drive to keep with me and tote it around. This drive is the perfect solution. I really can't believe how easy this is to use, and it makes me wish I had gone ahead and gotten an external drive sooner instead of trying to manage the size files I kept on my computer to save on disk space and trying to move things around the network in an effort to back important things up.
There is only one issue I have noticed with this drive so far, but it's with the USB cord and not the drive itself- if you move it around, the computer will wrongly assume you've ejected the drive and you will get a pop-up warning about the drive no longer being available. I don't know how much of a problem this will be down the road, but since I don't really plan on moving the computer around while I back it up, I'm not too concerned. Also, USB cables are not exactly in short supply around here (we have a bit of a computer parts graveyard collection building up in a spare bedroom...)
If you have a Mac, and are looking for a SIMPLE, compact, and effortless way to back up your files, whether its your entire hard drive or important documents, media, or digital photos- look no further.
