(More customer reviews)I'm sorry to say, that to my ears the pair of Meelec M9's that weren't defective, sound better than the M21. The midrange is even more recessed, and the sound is just not quite right. They fit much easier than the M9's, and the build looks great. Looking for similar priced competition, I purchased the Nuforce NE6 along with these. It's not even close, the NE6 sound much better (to my ears) Like I said, the M9's even sound considerably better to my ears. I have al arge collection of tips, and will continue to look for a better sound. I don't really think it will help. The real shame is that Meelec is a good outfit, and the extras you get, along with good build, make for what could be a great thing. As for the sound, the NE6 walk all over these, as do the M9 from Meelec.
Maybe 150 hours of run in will help, I'm left wondering if the smaller driver used is the difference. Either that, or my set is not perfect, a problem I had with one of two sets of M9's from Meelec. The upside is that meelec, along with other budget vendors like nuforce, have outstanding CS. Much better than most.
OK....I'm eating crow here. Not everyone believes in burn in or break in. I don't have a hard stance either way, othe than to say not one of my BA iem's has changed much over time. These M21's now have over 200 hours of time hooked up to an ipod/computer, or CD player. The sound has transformed quite a bit. The hollow sound that made everything sound a bit "off" is gone. I changed the rating to 4 stars. They deserve it, and maybe a hair more. The trensformation comes down besically to the mids coming through much better. Not even the Sennheiser IE8 changed as much in charecter, but the only thing that changed on the IE8's was the bass (for the most part) Where these had an exteremely hollow midrange. I no longer hear that, and I can't chalk it up to brain burn in since they have only 40 hours in my ears. Meelec is a good outfit, so I thought it was only fair to update my review, I can now say these are a great choice for those with small ear canals due to the small body of the iem.
The bass is pretty well behaved, and the mids and treble are pretty good. Not bass monsters. But they do have some kick.
All in all, these are now a very enjoyable listen. The treble has enough reange, but don't expect it to match a BA phone like the UE triples, or the Audio Technica CK10, it does strike a nice balance tohugh. My regards to Meelec.
If it matters, they still fall a bit short of the SP51 by Meelec, which is not surprising. They are much easier to fit though, and very comfortable. I'm not going to say they are better than the Nuforce NE6 either, mainly because the NE^ can make as much change in sound sig as any iem I've heard by swapping tips. Which in my opinion, double flange tips work best with the NE6, the single flange work better with the M21.
Hope this helps with the very crowded selection of budget iem's now available, that rival the very expensive stuff in most areas. The difference is there, but is lost in public largely, and the lack of good recordings available make the difference very small most of the time. Listening was done with a mix of apple lossless and WMA lossless.
