(More customer reviews)This card uses the C-Media 4-channel PCI audio chip, which is the CMI8738-SX.
The CD includes the 1733 driver version whose cmudax3.sys crashes 2003 R2 on install, after that, it gets stuck in reboot loops. In safe mode, the uninstaller was found to not be fully built, so I had to delete the sys file, remove the "software" from add-remove, and then "uninstall" from device manager.
The website recommends version 1730 for 2003-32, which also crashes on install. After reboot, it says the device is up normally, but media players fail.
The latest version on siig is 1739, which also crashes on install. On boot, it shows nothing is installed.
The latest version on cmedia is 1740, but the installer only works on Windows 7.
The next version down from CMedia is 1734. This reports "7.1 surround" rather than 4-channel. The device driver still crashes with:
BAD_POOL_HEADER
STOP 0x00000019 (0x00000020, 0x8AD1B680, 0x8AD1B898, 0xB8434EE8)
cmudax3.sys - Address B8434EE base at B8434000, Datestamp 49c06bcf
At first, I thought this might be an issue with 2003 and sound support; however, I have a virtual sound card driver that installs a device which works just fine.
My other thoughts are that this might be an issue with the Dell PowerEdge SC440, or the card but most likely, this is a driver issue.
So, if this works for you, then the price, size, and basic sound card functionality would be great.
However, for me, it just doesn't work.
